Soon there could be another company from which disc golfers can get their discs! Vibram® is looking to get it's foot in the door of the ever growing disc golf disc market. Vibram® is a well established company in the rubber accessories market, specializing in soles for shoes and work boots as well as making products like dog toys and rubber hoof pads for horses. Vibram's® initial discs will be a pair of new putters. The first is to beThe Vibram VP, an over-stable putter, while the second with be a less stable version. The first prototypes are designed for field testing and are just now getting into the hands of a select group of players from around the country who have been specifically chosen to give their impressions and feedback about the performance of the new discs. The company choose fifteen to twenty players located throughout the United States to test the new prototypes and put them through their paces in order to get a variety of opinions about the discs. Each player will receive 4-6 of the first batch of over-stable putter prototypes to test them in several categories such as: what the player thinks of the look of the disc, how the grip feels, as well as how it performs both as a putter and as a short approach disc. After the initial test of the new putter, reviews are looking good! The disc has a good feel to it, with a grippy texture that fits nicely into your hand. The day I test-threw the putter, the winds were about 10-15 mph with gusts up to around 20 mph. The putter held a great line into the wind and could handle a good tug off the tee without turning over. When putting with the new disc, it seemed to hold a nice flat line on slow speed putts and on the longer putts of 30-35 feet it did show a slight fade at the end of it's flight. And it likes to stick to the chains! It reacts much like many "soft" putters in that it doesn't seem to bounce out or kick off the chains on impact when putting with some pace on your throw. It doesn't appear to have as much glide as some of the harder putters, but knowing that, it's easy to compensate with a little extra pace that doesn't hurt it on impact.

The second group of putters to be tested (the less stable version) don't have a specific date as to when they would be hitting the test players' hands, but is thought to follow the completion of testing on the VP. According to Steve Dodge of Vibram discs, "Vibram is testing this product with the full intention of getting feedback, making any modifications as necessary, and releasing this discs for general sale. We should all be aware, however, that there are no time frames on this and no guarantees that the disc will meet the strict performance standards that Vibram sets for itself. We are testing these discs to see where we stand so far". We look forward to hearing more about the future release of the Vibram putters.
