2009 United States Women's Disc Golf Championships
September 18-20th Quad Cities,Ia

-"In Their Own Words...."

The United States Women's Disc Golf Championship is so much more than just a few rounds of disc golf. It's a time for the ladies to come together and share the experience of playing in a setting rich in disc golf tradition and history. Here, "In Their Own Words..." everyone can get a taste of what the experience means to those who play! If you've played in a past event add your thoughts to our Comment Wall and let others share in the fun!

The United States Women's Disc Golf Championship is such an enriching experience for anyone who plays it! Until La Vie En Rose this year, this tournament was the only women's-only event we have to play. This is the only time you will see this many women disc golfers! It's awesome!

This is a very special event because women of any age and any skill level are welcome to play! The tournament hosts are extraordinary and the care we receive is exceptional. We have been provided scorekeepers, lunches, dinners, players party, players packages, lots of ctps, bonus prizes for random things (Huntsville had high score, low score, closest to shuttle)...it is so much fun!

I remember my first Women's Nationals (USWDGC) Peoria 2002. What amazed me the most was seeing so many women playing disc golf! I was also impressed that we had scorekeepers and were provided lunch each day! Now I look forward to the competition, the experience, meeting new players, and being a part of something special for women disc golfers.

This event "travels" each year so the location will now be different year to year. I played in Peoria 2002-2007, then Huntsville 2008, and I will be playing in the Quad Cities in 2009. Playing the courses is always fun, the ones in Peoria and Huntsville were great for Women's Nationals, but I've also really enjoyed my time off the course. In Peoria, a bunch of us stayed in the same hotel and went out to eat together...there was a comedy club night...players party with dinner provided at the local restaurant. We all spent more time together than we ever do! In Huntsville, there was a Space and Rocket Center and cotton fields...quite different from Iowa! We actually played a course on a military base where NASA is located! We had a putting and distance competition one evening, and we were provided a bunch of food! The Rocket City Chain Gang took such great care of their courses and us players!

I am looking forward to the Quad Cities hosting 2009 because their club and courses are amazing!
You definitely should go to this tournament and bring your friends too!
See you there!

It's the true experience you feel when you're participating in an 'all women's' tournament. It's nothing like any other tournament because of vibe of friendships, families, and true competition between disc golf’s best women is so apparent. There are many women that save up to make this their only tournament of the year, just because of the bond that happens when we get together every year. It's not as easily said, as it is something that every woman in this sport should experience! Come on ladies, here’s our chance to show our power in numbers!

-Valarie Jenkins

If you’re a female disc golfer and tournament player, then you are used to playing on a disc golf course that is filled predominantly by men.  It is an entirely different feeling to be on a course that is packed full of disc golfing women.  It is both comforting and heart-warming to see skirts, pony-tails, and a sea of smiling, female faces.  It is an experience that I believe any women would appreciate and truly enjoy.  Such events are completely built to showcase and honor female disc golfers.  It is a trend that I hope will continue to grow and thrive.  Please make an effort to be a part of this celebration of women in disc golf.

-Juliana Korver

Wow, Nats is so much fun! I wish I could just shake all the women who don't go to this event and make them understand how quality it is! I will try to never miss one. The payout is always great and the scheduling of rounds always comes second to the extra activities. Come and you won't be sorry!

My first USWDGC was my favorite tournament, ever. It was the tournament I had to become a PDGA member to even play! I didn't know what I was getting myself into and little did I know that one tournament could change my perspective of the game. At an event like this, the focus is as much about making shots as making friends. I see women throw more confidently than they ever have just because of the positive vibes flowing through all of us. Let's face it, there's not many of us ladies out here! So come to the QCs, bring a friend and make some more!
-Liz Carr

The USWDGC is always a terrific event.  Since there are so few Pro Women and they live scattered around the world, Pro Women get used to playing in very small fields or else playing with the men.  It is an extraordinary experience to be surrounded by a full field of female players at the USWDGC.  The hosts of this event have a long history of making the event female-friendly, including choosing apppropriate courses for the various divisions, having a super player's package, providing lots of freebees and emphasizing fun.  I look forward to this year's event in the Quad Cities.

There is nothing like the bond women share. To mix that with a disc golf tournament/event is icing on the cake! Whether you are a beginner or a touring pro, we are all one at the USWDGC. You feel pampered beyond belief. It is much more than a disc golf competition. I played in the USWDGC in my hometown last year (Huntsville, AL) and hadn't picked up a disc in over 7 months but knew I would have a blast regardless of how I played... and I did. I have never seen so many smiles, hugs, laughs and high-fives in a round of golf. The added activities between rounds, after rounds and during the evenings are a bonus too. This is an event you do not want to miss! Thank you Quad City for hosting our event! Oh and remember..."What happens at USWDGC STAYS at USWDGC!" See you there! ~Peace!

For my first trip to Women's Nationals I remember tagging along with 2 of the other QC area Pro's Tracey Lopez and Kathy Betcher. I was very new to the sport and taking in all that I could. At this point I didn't know the other girls very well, I had become used to being the only girl at tournaments, usually playing in my own division because there weren't any other advanced ladies around.  Women's nationals was a great learning experience for me.  Very humbling now that I got to play real competition, and I realized I wasn't as good as I thought! Haha. I had a great time with all the girls, met a lot from around the country that I still maintain relationships with. Tracey and Kathy are both very good friends of mine! I also got the opportunity to see the highest level of play out there for women, seeing my first final 4 of Des Reading, Valarie Jenkins, Angela Tschiggfrie, and Burl! It was awesome. Its a fun tournament, estrogen only!!! I look forward to hosting this in our back yard and showing all the ladies what the QC golf scene is about. We have great courses, and many dedicated players who will make this one of the best tournies you have played in. I cant wait! :)  See you all soon!

I hesitated driving 16 hours to my first USWDGC in Peoria, but I haven't missed one since.  Perhaps winning helped.  : )  But, imagine days of disc golf, slumber parties, girl talk, making friends and just having lots of fun.  The USWDGC is more than disc golf, it's an experience you won't forget or want to miss the next year.  You'll be treated like a real participant in a tournament designed for you, for all women.  Finally you won't just be that extra little division at a  tournament, you ARE the tournament.  You'll see some amazing golf and realize that women are awesome golfers.  It's all about you so don't miss it!
-Kathy Hardyman

WOW! Where do I start? Being in an area where there aren't any women competitors besides myself is hard. I absoloutely look forward to playing in this event just so I can see all my pals that I otherwise wouldn't see throughout the year. There is so much fun and games to play! I think that all women players should try it just once for the experience it. Good luck QC in making this year successful!
-Cory Hill

If there is one tournament I would travel anywhere to, it would be USWDGC.  What I look forward to every year is the excitement of seeing women you may only see once a year, or once every other year, meeting new women, the number of women in one tournament, playing new courses, score keepers, watching the top women battle it out.  There are many more things too.  I can't wait to see everyone in Iowa!
-Erin Oakley

Having  not flown in a plane since 1999, never attended a Women's Nationals and not practiced before hand, I was filled with excitement!  My traveling partner and I took a red-eye from LAX at 12:40 AM and had a 4 hour lay-over in Dallas/FW.  We arrived in Huntsville, AL just before noon on Thurs 9/18. Before I go any further, I just have to once again thank Dean and Ginger Tannock for their hospitality throughout the week.  I've never gone so far and spent so little money!!  The tournament sponsors took care of our lunches and dinners and we finally convinced Ginger to let us buy the breakfast bisquit and the after rounds beers!  Other than our plane tickets, we purchased nothing else and had to beg our hosts to let us help out!  There's nothing like homemade pizza and a cold brew on the back porch with new friends!!  Kathy and I truly thank you for helping make this one of the most funnest and least expensive tournament we've ever attended!

So, on with the story.... we arrived just one day before competition and having been up all night long, I was just up for walking a course.  But these die hard golfers want to play!  Plus, we're all amped to be there and meet up with others from around the country.

Day one of the competition began in Hartsville, AL, the only course I had never played before.  I attended a World Championships back in '93 but this course was not yet installed.  My first group consisted of 3 other ladies I had never met before and we were all from different states.  That was cool!  They provided us with scorekeepers, spotters on every  hole and some had caddies to boot.

So after day one, I was in the 2nd group out of 15 ladies, with the top 4 in our division being in the 1st group.  BTW, the little lady who won was only 13 yrs old and CRUSHED us all!  She never left that top group either!  Amazing!

Shot my best round at that darn throw-n-pray course!  I want to give a special shout out to LeAnn from Birmingham, AL.  She and Comedy Boy traded funny jokes and kept me laughing and out of my slow speed come apart the day before.  I got to play with LeAnn again on my final round and have most respect for her golf game!  Keep it up, girl! To sum up, during my 20 year career, I've attended about 10 masters cups, 4 world championships, several state championships and several nationals.  By far, my favorite is this USWDGC's!  THANK YOU to the Chris and his crew and way to come together for the ladies, guys!

-Michelle Wade

It was an absolutely amazing experience. The pampering of the disc golf community was awesome. There were booths set up with wet wipes to cool off and other goodies to keep the day going. In addition, many men volunteered to caddy and a scorekeeper was on each card, making it easier to focus on the game. The best part, however, was seeing other women, who were far above my level, crushing their discs and hitting amazing putts. If I wasn't hooked before, this tournament did it. I was able to put my skills in perspective and witness other women playing. It was a great event for fellowship and for learning more about the sport.

I Fully support all woman in Disc Golf.  My wife and my best friends wife came out to the Peoria, IL 2006 event and they loved it.  Myself and my buddy came out and pre played the courses for them so they wouldn't go in totally blind to them.  We did caddy a little for them on the last day as well.  Nice and relaxing for the guys and fun for the ladies.
I run a women's only event in MI and have for 3 years.  The ladies support the event, We get a decent amount of guys volunteering for the ladies as well.
Have lots of fun in IA this year and in all your disc golfing efforts.  Let's get more ladies playing this wonderful sport we all love.
-William

For me, the real magic is the mutual respect and camaraderie among the women. It’s true, Women just have more fun. By the time I left I had made many friendships that have continued until today. I felt like I could sit next to anyone at the lunches (provided by our gracious hosts) and come away with yet another cool disc golfing friend.
